biomatrix: a systems approach to organisational and societal change

cover of Biomatrix: A Systems Approach to Organisational and Societal Change

by Elisabeth Dostal in collaboration with Anacreon Cloete and György Járos (3rd edition, 2005, 562 pages, ISBN 9780620342353)

This book provides a comprehensive theory of management. It outlines how change in organisations and society needs to be managed in the information age: systemically. It also proposes ideas for new governance models.

  • Part 1 of the book provides an overview of Biomatrix Systems Theory.
  • Part 2 applies the theory to management, organisation development and transformation.
  • Part 3 applies the theory to dissolving complex societal problems.

The book may be regarded as a textbook for management, leadership and governance in the 21st century. Case studies are provided throughout.

You can preview the book on Google books.

biomatrix management education programme

All modules include several hours of online video presentations, summary of the theory online and in a manual, detailed exercise instructions online and in the manual and a template for filling in answers and easy data flow.

The prescribed sequence of modules must be adhered to: the modules build on each other and data flows from one module to the next.

Purchase of any of the module sets gives you access to our e-learning platform for 2 months.

Please note that the exercise template has been optimised for MS Office 2007 and may not have all the functionality in other software versions.

level 1:  systems thinking and systemic problem solving basics

The introductory level familiarises learners with the basics of systems thinking and how to apply them to systemic problem solving. It has been designed with managers in mind and business case studies are provided throughout. However, anyone will benefit from the following two modules as systems thinking – and systemic problem solving skills – are applicable in all life areas.

module 1: overview of general and biomatrix systems theory

This module explains systems theory in general and the basics of Biomatrix Systems Theory specifically. The key theoretical concepts can also be studied on the Biomatrix Systems Theory webpage www.biomatrixtheory.com.

The aim of the exercises is to generate understanding of a systemic view of the world and systemic behaviour. Some of the output from the exercises becomes input to exercises in the following modules.

The module includes

  • 3 hours of online video presentation
  • online summary of theory
  • detailed exercise instructions and summary of theory in a downloadable pdf manual (35 pages)
  • assignment template for filling in answers and easy data flow.

module 2: systemic problem (dis)solving

This module provides the theory for understanding problems, when they can be solved and when they need to be dissolved through ideal system redesign. It provides relevant methodologies, including systemic brainstorming techniques, as well as templates for problem dissolving.

The exercises involve identifying current problems related to the case study, showing their systemic nature and brainstorming ideas for (dis)solving them.

The output from the exercises is further processed in the following modules.

The module includes

  • 3 hours of online video presentation
  • online summary of theory
  • detailed exercise instructions and summary of theory in a downloadable pdf manual (49 pages)
  • assignment template for filling in answers and easy data flow.

level 2: biomatrix project and functional development

This level builds on the systems thinking foundations laid previously. It helps learners to develop theoretical and practical systemic project and functional design, development and management skills.

The learners create an ideal design for the project or function they have been working with. They also explore the basics of change management, especially the aspects related to project and function (re)design. (In terms of Biomatrix systems theory, project and function are both activity systems.)

module 3: systemic project design and functional redesign

This module explains the generic systems principles of systemic project design. They are also applicable to the (re)design of an organisational function, business process and supply chain.

Learners are introduced to seven generic forces of system organisation: ethos, aims, process, structure, governance, substance / mei and environmental interaction.

The learner explores the case study from the perspective of each of the seven forces and integrates the output into an ideal project design or functional redesign.

Data from previous modules is processed and more data generated.

Note on data: By data we do not mean quantitative data, although these may also be generated, but mostly qualitative data such as descriptions of problems, ideal outcomes and proposed strategies.

The module includes

  • 3,5 hours of online video presentations
  • online summary of theory
  • detailed exercise instructions and summary of theory in a downloadable pdf manual (76 pages)
  • assignment template for filling in answers and easy data flow.

module 4: systemic project and functional change management

This module outlines some theoretical concepts about why and how systems change. It reviews the steps involved in ideal system (re)design and outlines the principles of implementation planning.

The learners make an implementation plan for the ideal design produced in module 3. They also reflect on how they will implement the design and evaluate its success.

The module includes

  • 1,5 hours of online video presentations
  • online summary of theory
  • detailed exercise instructions and summary of theory in a downloadable pdf manual (35 pages)
  • assignment templates for filling in answers and easy data flow.

This module will be available in March 2012.

$500

To be able to buy the modules of this level you must have purchased the modules of level 1 previously (they build on each other).
